Thread of life. Spinning is a method of getting thread from wool or vegetable fabric.
First craftsmen didn't have any instruments for making thread. They simply twisted thick thread by hands. The oldest spinning instrument is considered to be the hook. It let to speed and a little bit mechanize the process of making thread. Twisted fabrics after applying unusual form had to stabilize at the hook. The thread could be enough long. It is interesting that spinning hook is still used for making fishing nets.
Spindle became the next progressive step in developing technology of spinning. Supplied with small disk with hole in the center it got additional inertia that let the work easier. It became possible to make thread of special quality. The thread has several characteristics - thickness, promptness per unit of length, direction of twist - with the sun or against the sun.
N.J.Nikiforovsky in 19th century mentioned that emotions and physical condition of spinner affects on the resulted thread. It is usual that unbalanced person has as a result unequal thread - it can be at one moment thin, at another thick, harsh or slack. Another interesting fact is that a modern researcher from North America affirms that according to the part of the thread he can determine exact age and nationality of the spinner.
Creation of thread surrounded with legends. Girl kept her first made thread in secret place and lately secretly stitched into clothing of the husband. That ritual had magic effect and made family life lasting. The same thread was possible to put on the hand of first-born or decedent after ablution.
Spinning-wheel appeared in Europe in 15th century and in Russia approximately in 17th century. Thanks to it spinning became more productive. It is possible to make 400 g of wool a day using spinning-wheel. The same amount of wool may be made in 7 days using spindle. Inspite of that spinning-wheel didn't replace a spindle. Usually thread made with spinning-wheel was used for knitting. Wool for weaving was prepared with spinning-wheel.
Using spinning-wheel it is possible to spin flax equally and thinly. But spinner has to slaver fingers in order to take fibers. That's why usually there is a cup with sour berries near the spinner.
All those who learned to use spinning-wheel before my eyes passed through the stage despair and disappointment is own results. But after several kilometers of made thread you will enjoy that practical occupation for the whole life.
